Nasya: Ayurvedic care through the nasal route
Nasya is an Ayurvedic procedure in which prescribed medicine is administered through the nose. At Dr. Pillai’s Ashtaang in Ambernath, the form of medicine, preparation and course are selected after consultation. It is part of physician-led care for the individual patient.
Plan a consultation
Its place in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic texts give Nasya a particular place in care of the head and associated structures. They distinguish cleansing, nourishing and pacifying purposes. Selected indications include heaviness of the head, some forms of headache and nasal complaints, interpreted according to the Ayurvedic assessment. These are traditional indications rather than a promise that one preparation treats every head or sinus problem. [N1]
At your consultation, we listen to the pattern of your symptoms, how long they have been present and what treatment you have already tried. This helps us decide whether Nasya belongs in your plan and whether further assessment is needed first.
The medicine is selected for you
Nasya is not the name of a single oil or product. Depending on the intended treatment, prescribed preparations may include medicated oils, other suitable liquids or medicinal powders. The choice and strength are part of the physician’s decision.
You do not need to choose a formulation before visiting. Bring your current prescriptions and a list of medicines, nasal products and supplements. Advice about changing existing treatment is given after reviewing your case.
Your visit: preparation, treatment and rest
Consultation → preparation → supervised Nasya → aftercare.
At Ashtaang, preparation may include massage around the head and neck and appropriate warming, according to the selected procedure. The prescribed medicine is then administered through the nasal route under physician supervision. Tell the clinician about discomfort during the session so that your response can be assessed.
The aftercare plan includes rest and may include gargling as directed. Instructions are specific to your treatment; a sequence used for another patient is not automatically suitable for you.
Planning the course
The appointment length and number of visits are confirmed after assessment. The administration of medicine is only one part of the visit, so allow for preparation and rest rather than assuming a quick nasal application is the complete treatment.
Some plans involve repeated visits. Confirm dates and practical arrangements before booking time away from work or travelling to the clinic. Our care is outpatient, without overnight admission or accommodation. Ask whether your particular plan needs any changes to meals, activity or travel.
Suitability and comfortable care
Tell the physician if you are pregnant, recently unwell, unusually tired or have difficulty breathing. Classical guidance identifies circumstances in which Nasya should be deferred or avoided; the assessment is more important than following a standard online routine. [N1]
Report coughing, breathing difficulty, bleeding or pronounced discomfort during treatment immediately. Do not continue an application that is causing distress. Persistent or severe symptoms need medical assessment, and breathing difficulty needs urgent care.
Do not put cooking oils, essential oils, powders or an unprescribed preparation into your nose to imitate Nasya. The formulation and method require professional guidance.
Aftercare and expectations
Before leaving, make sure you understand the advice about rest, meals and your next visit. Bring your previous prescription to follow-up appointments so the physician can review the plan with you.
Nasya has a longstanding Ayurvedic rationale, but a traditional indication does not establish a guaranteed result for a modern diagnosis. The purpose of treatment should be clear in your own case. Continuing or changing the plan depends on clinical review rather than simply repeating sessions.
Questions patients often ask
Is Nasya the same as saline nasal washing?
No. Nasya uses physician-selected Ayurvedic medicine and a specific treatment plan. Do not interchange products or methods on your own.
Will everyone receive the same oil?
No. Medicines and materials are chosen for the individual assessment and intended purpose.
Can I book a course without seeing the doctor?
Begin with consultation. The physician confirms suitability and the type of Nasya before a course is arranged.
How many days will I need?
The number and sequence of visits are decided for your plan. A fixed course is not appropriate for every patient.
Can I use the instructions here to perform Nasya myself?
No. This page explains what to expect at the clinic; it does not provide dosing or self-administration instructions.
